Norbert Schlichting was born May 30, 1928, in Garrison, son of Edith (Behles) and John Schlichting. He attended school in Garrison.
On November 28, 1950, he married ArDella Meisch in Garrison at the St. Nicholas Church. They were married for 47 years and had three daughters; Terriene, Peggy, and Jodie. He served in the Korean War as a Medical Technician from 1951 until 1957 when he was honorable discharged.

Norb & ArDella purchased the Dairy Queen in 1970. At that time it was a seasonal drive-up business. In 1974, they remodeled the Dairy Queen to a full menu sit down restaurant. It was not uncommon to see Norb behind the grill or at the “coffee table” visiting with customers. After several attempts, they were finally able to retire in March of 1997. Unfortunately, they were not able to go traveling together in retirement; ArDella passed away in July of 1997.
Norb was an avid golfer and a member of the Garrison Golf Course, spending many hours in the development of the current course with many of his golfing buddies, especially Harold Rensch. After the passing of his wife, Norb and his daughters went on annual golf trips. What started out as a weekend golf outing turned in the a weeklong adventure over several years. They golfed most of the courses in North Dakota and several in Minnesota. It was not uncommon to see Norb at the Golf Course with Scooter, his dog who had been with him for 16 years.
