Delma Bear White Calfe, “Rushing Bear Woman”, 70, White Shield, departed this life January 19 at the St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, North Dakota. She was born October 31, 1942 on the Bear family ranch located near the 6 mile creek in the Elbowoods/Nishu area of the Fort Berthold Reservation.
Delma attended school at Elbowoods, White Shield and one year at Kalso High School in Washington. Delma returned to White Shield to help her mother at the Bear Ranch, and also to help older sister, Pauline White Bear raise her children (Wayne, Elaine, Madonna, Gary, Loie, Richard & Elmer). In later years, she also raised her niece Susan Bear and grandson Duane Bear the “light of her life”. Delma was married to Albert White Calfe Jr. She was a lifetime member of the Arikara Congregational Church. Delma was also a lifetime member of Joseph Young Hawk/Elmer Bear American Legion Post #253 Auxiliary. Delma was gentle, kind and caring. She gave a helping hand when she could. Her home was always open to those in need of a place to stay. She was a talented embroiderer she made many beautiful dish towels and pillow cases. Delma enjoyed watching wrestling and reading true detective books. She also enjoyed watching her nephew Richard play basketball and enjoyed watching him ride all three rough stock rodeo events. Later, she enjoyed watching her grandson Duane, grass dance at the local pow-wows and play grade school basketball. She was a supporter of the White Shield community organizations bingo fundraisers.
Delma was never blessed with children. As was stated previously, she helped raise her nieces, nephews and numerous grandchildren. She was a Mother to many of them.
She was preceded in death by her parents - Robert Bear, Sr. & Dora Hopkins Bear; brothers - Sam, Elmer, Duane, Richard & Winston; sisters – Ida Mae Bear & Pauline White Bear.
Delma will be dearly missed. She is survived by sisters Loretta Meridith & Roberta Bear (White Shield); brothers Robert Bear Jr., (White Shield) and Grayden Bear (Bismarck) and many cousins, nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 am at the Ralph Wells Jr. Memorial Complex in White Shield. Wake services will be held on Tuesday at 5:00 pm at the complex. Burial will be at the Congregational Cemetery in White Shield.
