Agnes K. Vetter was born June 29, 1921 in Garrison, ND. She was the second of five children born to Joel and Mathilda (Hummel) Johnson. Agnes grew up on the family farm, went to country school through 8th grade, then on to High School in Garrison, ND.
Ray came from a large family, the Vetter boys had their own baseball team and it was at one of the baseball games that Ray met Agnes. The two were married on December 3, 1938 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison, ND. To their union were born 4 children, three girls and one boy. Agnes always had a beautiful flower garden. Her hollyhocks graced all around the house and smaller flowers in front of the tall hollyhocks. She had a large vegetable garden and loved working in it. She canned all the vegetables that were left after her children ate their share. The carrots tasted so good, pulled from the ground with some dirt left on them. She was an amazing cook and baker. There were always fresh baked cookies, cakes, bread and pies. All of us girls looked forward to be told to get something from the basement, because we would sneak a frozen cookie from the freezer.
When they moved to South Dakota in 1961, she worked as a nurses aide for 5 years. Also worked at a ladies dress shop and a hardware store. People were surprised that she knew what different tools were. She enjoyed working with people.
Agnes died August 6, 2017 from heart failure. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, her parents, her son Marlin, brothers Karl & Albin, sisters Hilda & Alma, and numerous family members. She is survived by her 3 daughters, Gwen Johnson of Mesa, AZ, Jackie (Jack) Lakoduk of Hudson, Florida, Coradean (Bob) Doran of Quartz Hill, CA, nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
