Aleck Mehlhoff, 94, Minot, formerly of Coleharbor, died on Thursday, Oct. 23 at a Minot hospital. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2:00 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison. Burial will be at the Garrison City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 4 to 8 pm at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.
Aleck was born February 9, 1920 to Jacob and Amelia (Bauch) Mehlhoff in rural Coleharbor, ND where he was raised and educated. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Coleharbor. As a teenager, he served for 18 months in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC's).
Aleck married Esther Weiss on November 4, 1945 at Aleck's parents home in rural Coleharbor. They made their home in Linder Township, northeast of Coleharbor, where they farmed and raised cattle. While on the farm they were members of Bethel Lutheran Church in rural Coleharbor for 40 years. Aleck served on the church council for many of those years. They later became members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison. Aleck and Esther lived on the their farm for 50 years before moving to Minot in 1991, where they have lived for 23 years.
When Aleck wasn't busy with the farm and cattle he was a quite accomplished accordion player. He played at various places in the area and also played numerous jam sessions in Texas. He was also a member of the Farmer's Union.
Aleck is survived by his wife of almost 69 years Esther, Minot; brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Laura Mehlhoff, Bismarck; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Mehlhoff, Garrison, Arlene Mehlhoff, Minot, and Bonnie Mehlhoff, Bermuda Dunes, CA; and brother-in-law, Sam Eslinger, Garrison, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Edmund, Reuben, Roy (Darlene), Arnold (Adeline), Curtis (Lois), and sisters and brothers-in-law, Alma Eslinger, and Rena (Willie) Weishaar.
