Alex was born September 26, 1925 in Garrison, ND to John and Christina (Aldinger) Steinwand. He started working as a farm hand at 10 years old. He worked for his brother Alfred in Washburn when he was 13.
Alex married Doris Sayler on June 2, 1954 in Max, ND. Just after their marriage he worked for Stanley Saugstad in Minot. In 1957 they purchased the family farm northeast of Garrison. In his early 20's, Alex worked construction jobs on the Garrison Dam, Snake Creek Embankment, the railroad and he also worked for a company installing highline poles and other various duties.
Alex loved the farming life very much. He had a second love for the land and cattle. He was extremely dedicated and worked awfully hard to build the farm up to what it is today. He may have slowed down a little in his later years, but he never really retired.
Alex was a member of the First Congregational Church in Garrison where he served as a deacon. He was a member of the Garrison Wagon Train and rode in South Dakota with the "Bicentennial Wagon Train Pilgrimage to Pennsylvania".
Alex is survived by his children, Debra Steinwand, Lincoln, ND, Pam (Gary) Trueblood, Minot, ND, Gail Steinwand, Graling (Susan) Steinwand, all of Garrison; grandchildren, Cassie (Derick) Seibel, Isaiah (Mariya Williams) Steinwand, Jason (Michelle) Fliginger, and Ryan Fliginger; great grandchildren, Zaheir Steinwand, Brycen Burgard, Rique (Robert) Innes, and Viola Salgado, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, parents, in-laws, Carl (Katherine) Sayler, brothers, Alfred, John, Fred, Ed and Jake Steinwand, and sisters, Regina Engel, Bertha Grueneich, Emma Lynne and Ruth Mehlhoff, and Martha Steinwand.
