Obituary

August Carlson, 95, Garrison, died on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at a Garrison nursing home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10:30 am at the First Congregational Church in Garrison. Burial will be at the Garrison City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 2 to 7 at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.

August E. Carlson was born August 12, 1917 on the homestead of August and Bertha (Gustafson) Carlson. He attended country schools and graduated from Garrison High School. He worked in the tunnels at Fort Peck Dam and later taught school in Oliver, McLean and Ward counties.
In 1942, August married Iveas Retterath. They purchased a farm near Douglas, ND, where they raised small grains and livestock. August served many years on the Douglas School Board and also served for 45 years on the McLean County School Redistricting Reorganization Committee. He was the master for the Masonic Lodge two different years and served on the McLean County Farmers Union Board for many years.

August and Iveas retired to Garrison in 1983 and traveling became their favorite hobby. They spent 70 wonderful years together as husband and wife.

August is survived by his wife, Iveas, Garrison; two sons, Linton Carlson and Terry Carlson, both of Bismarck; daughter, Colleen (Tony) Barnes, Bismarck; 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; and two brothers, Carl and Arnold Carlson both of Garrison.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 6 sisters.
