Avis Giffey, 90, Roseglen, died on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at a Bismarck hospital following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:00 am at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Roseglen. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2 to 7 at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.
Avis Caroline (Thompson) Giffey was born October 27, 1924, in Makoti, ND, to Sig and Hannah (Nelson) Thompson. She was raised and educated in Makoti, graduating from Makoti High School in 1942.
She met her future husband of 60 years, Donald F. Giffey, while attending high school. They were married February 27, 1944 in Hope Lutheran Church in Makoti. They lived on the family farm near Roseglen their entire lives. Donald passed away in 2004 and Avis continued to live in their home until her death.
Avis worked at the AAA office in Garrison for several years, but spent most of her life helping Donald with day to day farm work. She was a very active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Roseglen.
Avis is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Merlin) Otteman, Ft. Collins, CO; son, Donald C. (Priscilla), Roseglen, ND; grandchildren, Lisa (Scott) Ruthven, Ft. Collins, Kathryn (John) Moergen, Ft. Collins, Steven Renhowe, Greenwood Village, CO, Sarah (Eric) Kuntz, Richardton, ND, Timothy (Cheryl) Giffey, Moorhead, MN, and Rebecca Giffey, Bismarck, ND; 13 great grandchildren, Jacob, Hailey, Nicholas, and Avery Ruthven, Ethan, Collin, Conner, and Gracee Kuntz, and Isabelle, Piper, Gavin, Jacob, and Chase Giffey; brother, Gayland (Pat) Thompson, Towner, ND; brother-in-law, Ernest (Venetia) Giffey, Roseglen, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, parents-in-law, and two brothers.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Camp of the Cross, or the donor's choice.
