Bernice was born January 9, 1921 in rural Minnesota to Tom and Lena Gullickson. She lived in Minnesota with her parents for a number of years before moving to the Benedict/Ruso area in her early teens. At the age of 13, Bernice's mother died and she stayed home to care for her siblings. As a young woman Bernice worked various jobs, which even took her to Philadelphia.
On November 28, 1953 she married Arthur Kittleson in St. Paul, MN. They made their home in Benedict. Through the years Bernice worked as a painter for realtors in Minot and also worked at the nursing home in Garrison. When she wasn't busy working, Bernice liked to bowl and sew. She also enjoyed singing, especially with her sister Rosella. Her true love, however, was dancing. Not only did she love to polka, but she was also very talented, winning numerous trophies in competitions.
