Betty Flath, 85, Garrison, died on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the Garrison Memorial Hospital Nursing Facility. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison. Burial will be at the Garrison City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from Noon to 6 at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison. Betty Ruth was born November 7, 1931 in rural Coleharbor, ND to Adolph and Margaret (Kempf) Mehlhoff, one of nine children. She was raised on her family's farm and attended country school through 8 th grade. She then moved to Garrison and lived with her grandparents while attending high school, graduating from Garrison High School in 1950. Betty married Herbert Flath on November 19, 1950 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison. They made their home just east of Garrison, farming and raising their four children, Spencer, LaVonne, Richard and Mark.
Betty was a very hard worker, cleaning homes in the Garrison area and also cooking at the Garrison Hospital and McLean Manor. She was a tremendous cook and was most well known for her fresh buns and chocolate chip cookies. The main meals were almost always some sort of German dish.
When she had a spare moment, Betty enjoyed knitting and embroidery. She also had a large collection of salt and pepper shakers and carnival glass. She was a very active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She was the circle chairman and also taught Sunday School and Bible School.
Betty is survived by her children, Spencer (Pam) Flath, Garrison, LaVonne (Ron) Boucher, Minot, ND, Richard Flath, and Mark Flath, both of Garrison grandchildren, Brad Flath, Fargo, ND, Heather (Mitch) Svangstu, Noonan, ND, Brandon Flath, Garrison, ND, Lindsay Fleming, Minot, ND, and Nicole Boucher, Fargo, ND; great grandchildren, Ole, Gustav, Svea, and Aasta Svangstu, and Harley, Tatum Fleming and Slade Thomas; 1 brother, 1 sister, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Herbert.
