Blaine Meier, 84, Garrison, died on Monday, May 21, 2018 at his home. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:00 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison. Burial will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 am at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.
A prayer service will be said on Thursday at 7:00 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to funeral services at the church.
Blaine George Meier was born April 11, 1934, in Coleharbor, ND, to William and Vivian (Louser) Meier. He grew up in the Coleharbor area and graduated from Coleharbor High School.
In 1953 he married Peggy Davis and of that union 11 children were born. He was drafted into the US Army in 1953 and was stationed in Detroit, MI. After his discharge from active duty he returned to North Dakota and joined the Army Reserve and retired in 1994 as a Chief Warrant Officer with 40 years of services. He also worked for the Corp of Engineers in Riverdale during the construction of the Garrison Dam, US Fish & Wildlife, ND Game & Fish, US Postal Service, and the City of Garrison. After retirement he worked for several years for the McLean County Park Service as manager at Centennial Park. In 1986 he married Karen Vander Laan, adopting her daughter, he made his crew an even dozen. Blaine was a 51-year member of the American Legion where he held several post positions as well as serving as 5th District Commander, Central Region Commander and served on the Department Executive Committee. He was a member of St Paul Lutheran Church.
Blaine is survived by his wife of 31 years, Karen, Garrison; 7 sons, Blair (Dawn) of Bismarck; Damian (Dora) of Washburn; Michael of Pick City; Mark (Sheri) of Rapid City, SD; Shawn (Marlys) of Bismarck; Chad (Heidi) of Edgeley; Jay (Kateri) of Bismarck. Five daughters, Cheryl (Dave) Isaak of Pick City; Nyla (Jim) Tognarelli of Riverdale; Stacy (Norm) Braaten of Fort Peck, MT; Stephanie (Jude) Slabodnik of Williston; Willow (Dave) Sprenger of Garrison; 23 grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; sister & brother-in-law June & Bud Boots of Mandan, and sister-in-law Bonnie Vander Laan of Pollock, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Yvonne Goltz, brothers-in-law Earl Glyn Goltz, Arlo Vander Laan, and Terry Vander Laan.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be made to The American Legion Department of North Dakota Foundation.
