Dallas Lynn Dickens (Flying Along), 53, White Shield, passed on to the spirit world Tuesday May 6, 2014 in Sanford Hospital in Bismarck, North Dakota. Dallas was born December 12, 1960 in Garrison, ND to Felix and Maxine (Hosie) Dickens Sr.. His maternal grandparents were Lottie (Styles) and George Hosie and his paternal grandparents were Emma Dickens and John Two Crow. He was a child of the Prairie Chicken Clan and received his Hidasta Indian name from his clan uncle Malcom Wolf.
Dallas completed his Elementary and Junior High schooling in White Shield School. He received his GED in Denver, Colorado. He then attended a vocational school in Los Angeles, California.
When he returned home, he worked at Northrop, then contracted with the Tribal Natural Resource, where he became a guide with the seismic company to check for historical landmarks. He moved to Tacoma, WA in 1986, where he worked various carpentry jobs. During this time his relationship was with Marilyn Benson. In 1987 they returned back home, to start their family. Within this time frame they had five children together; Felicia Lynn, Casey Mae, Naomi Jean, Scott Lynn and Wilhelmina Grace. Also during this time he went into firefighting which became his passion. On the federal level of firefighting he started as a G1 and he left as a G12. Within his Tribal Firefighting career he was the Director of Fire Program. He also went on numerous wildfires within the western United States. As his fire management program, it set was up as an emergency response. He and his crew responded to the 2003 Columbia Space Shuttle clean up in Texas. Dallas was very compassionate about his work and continued on to train as a "Smoke Jumper."
Because of his professionalism and excellent work ethic, Dallas was sought after from private contractors throughout the Midwest. Eventually, he responded and was employed in Washington for some time and in Utah for one summer. Dallas wore many hats. He was a crew boss, engine boss roughneck, and many other positions too numerous to mention.
Dallas was not afraid to work and accepted any challenges, wherever we went he was sure to run into one of his crew members who really bragged him up. They admired him and called him "The Legend." And was well known by many.
Another passion of Dallas' was playing the drums. He was a member of several rock bands, and was always ready to "jam." He also loved to box, in which he received various awards and trophies. Unfortunately, due to several health issues, Dallas was forced into an early retirement.
In 2005, Dallas found his "soul mate" Yvette LaCroix of White Shield. They were married on December 2, 2006. Dallas and Yvette were inseparable, you could see and feel the love they had for one another. Dallas accepted Yvette's children as his own they are Chance Montel, Charlee Lyn, Chad Naaman and Karmen Charles Fox II.
He developed an even closer bond to their children, his grandchildren. All his grandchildren loved their "Papa." Dallas had a good sense of humor and was always making someone laugh. One time he asked Yvette if she thought the kids liked him because they could see eye to eye.
Dallas was survived by his wife Yvette of White Shield, ND. His children Felicia Lynn (Matt), Casey Mae, Naomi Jean, Scott Lynn and Wilhelmina Grace, all of Parshall, ND. Step children Chance Montel, Charlee Lyn, Chad Naaman, and Karmen Charles Fox II, all of White Shield, ND. Sisters, Jean Olson, Bremerton, Washington; Audrey Gottschall, St. Cloud, Minnesota; Celeste White Bear, Mooreton, ND; Connie Bennett, Garrison ND; Holly Fox and Maxine Torres Vasquez, Mandan ND; Madonna Dickens, Parshall ND; Brothers, Donald, Gary and Felix all of White Shield, ND
He was also blessed with 9 grandchildren, AnnaMarie, Reginald, Felix, Jenna, Cashdyn, Kingsdyn, Aidyn, Creedance and Cae'l.
He is preceded in death by his parents Felix and Maxine Dickens. Two brothers Felix Wayne and Max Owen. Two sisters Vickie Buckingham, and Adrienne Rae Hunter, and one daughter Anna Marie Benson.
Wake services will be held on Friday, May 9th at 5:00 p.m. at the Ralph Wells Memorial Complex in White Shield. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 10th at 11:00 a.m. at the Ralph Wells Memorial Complex in White Shield.
