Dana Howard, 65, White Shield, died on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 am at the Ralph Wells Jr. Memorial Complex in White Shield. Wake services will be held on Monday at 5:00 pm at the Complex. Burial will be at the Episcopal Cemetery in White Shield.
Dana Joseph Howard was born May 9, 1953 in Minot, ND to Frank Howard Sr. and Marion (Felix) Howard. He was raised and educated in White Shield. After graduation, he enlisted in the US Marines and served four years some of that time being in Cuba.
Following his time in the Marines, he went to live with Linda Holen in Twin Buttes,ND and were married for 6 years. Together they had 3 children, Eric, Karissa, and Garnette. Dana worked for the Grassy Butte Gasification plant for many years. While at work one day, part of the plant was exposed to toxic gas and a co-worker passed out and Dana risked his own life to rescue him from the plant.
Dana later moved back to White Shield and helped establish the first water treatment plant. He then trained all the other segments for rural water before retiring in 2017 because of health problems.
In his younger years, Dana enjoyed horseback riding, playing pool, attending pow-wows, and visiting his many friends and relatives.
Dana is survived by his children, Eric (Wendy) Howard, Karissa (Juan) Diaz-Corral, and Garnette Howard; grandchildren, Joseph and Fallon Howard and Sydney, Marissa, and Annalia Diaz-Corral; sisters, Yvonne (Duane) Fox, Anita (Russell) Dean; brothers, Byron Howard, Wade (Kim) Howard, Sidney Howard, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Sr. and Marion Howard, maternal grandparents, Philomena and Louis Felix Sr., paternal grandparents, Anna and Byron Wilde; brothers, Oscar John Howard, Franklin "Sioux" Howard, Louis "Red" Howard, and Olin "Blacky" Howard.
