Daniel James Mahoney was born June 27, 1949 in Minot, North Dakota. He was the eldest son of Lawrence (Jim) and Betty (Merk)Mahoney. He was baptized at St Bridget Catholic Church in Parshall, North Dakota. He attended school in Benedict and Ryder, North Dakota. After graduating from Ryder High School in 1967, he attended Grossmont College in San Diego, California.
Needing to work he left college and was drafted into the US Army in 1971. He completed his basic and advanced training at Fort Ord in 1971 and deployed to Vietnam in the artillery division as a mortar specialist where he was awarded the bronze star. After contracting an unknown jungle fever he was honorably discharged and returned to San Diego in 1972.
He went to work for General Dynamic NASSCO as a maintenance machinist in 1974 and was still employed there at the time of his death. He loved his job and the people with whom he worked.
Dan was a gentle soul, quiet and reserved to those who didn't know him well. However when he opened up he had an amazing, warped sense of humor and had such a giving nature. Although he didn't finish college he was well read. He never flaunted his knowledge but he was hard to beat at trivia. He loved his family and friends fiercely and enjoyed his desert trips, vacations back home, and time with loved ones. He so enjoyed his three trips back home in 2017 first to march with his dad at the Memorial Day Program in Ryder, second to celebrate his 50th class reunion with his classmates, and third to introduce his nephew to North Dakota hunting. We were blessed to have him in our life.
He is loved and survived by his parents, Jim and Betty Mahoney; his favorite brother, Larry (Janet) Mahoney of San Diego, California; his little sister Susan (David) Weber of Horace, North Dakota; his special aunt, Myrtle Peterschick of San Diego, California; his cherished niece, Michelle (Michael) Cole, and their children, Collin and Shane, Lakeside, California and his treasured nephew, Larry (Kristen) Mahoney, and their children Larry and Anthony, San Diego, California. Special "sisters" Stephanie (Richard) Hagen, Monica Eriksmoen, Teresa Petz, Sue Ellen Feist , Paulette (Craig) Lozensky, Myrna (Dan) Ness; "brothers" Timothy (Julie) Petz, Thomas Petz, John (Lynn) Petz, Peter Petz and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Stephen, his grandparents, his uncles, a special uncle, Charles Hustad, and a special "sister" Maureen Hagen.
