Our much loved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend Darlene (Yellow Bird) Meyers was born on March 24, 1923 in Elbowoods, North Dakota. She was born at home to good parents Charles and Nellie (Red Fox) Yellow Bird back in the good old days of Elbowoods. Darlene was raised in the district of Nishu where she attended Mission School. She graduated from Elbowoods High School in 1941. In high school she participated in the glee club, mixed chorus girls' trio, mixed quartet and girls' basketball team and was a member of the Echo staff, secretary for both the Senior class and dormitory organization and was the Christian Endeavor press agent. Darlene was at one time, a proud member of Little Shell Unit #300 Auxillary.
She encouraged her children and grandchildren to get an education. After high school she attended Haskell College in Lawrence, Kansas and Nursing School in Garrison. On February 28, 1953, she married Samuel Meyers, Sr. and together they raised their family in Shell Creek and New Town eventually settling in White Shield. After graduating from nursing school she worked at the Garrison Hospital as a Nurse's Aide for years. She also was employed at the White Shield School for many years as a student counselor/teacher's aide and then working in administration before her retirement.
She taught herself to play the piano, a favorite pastime. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, sewing, gardening, cooking, camping and going to yard sales. Her most enjoyable times were spent watching her grandchildren participate in their many activities.
Darlene was known for her beautiful singing voice. We remember her singing in the community and throughout the reservation for holidays, celebrations and church meetings. She used her voice in a good way - comforting many at wakes and funerals. Her children wished they had inherited her singing talent but unfortunately that did not happen.
Something even greater than her singing voice was her faith in God. Both Grandma Bird and Grandma Meyers always believed in a "higher power". Both would say, "Be good to one another, get along, forgive" … this is her legacy. These are the words she would want to say to her children, grandchildren and to her community.
She leaves behind her sister Joyce Krueger; two sons: Bennett Yellow Bird, Sr., Darren Meyers, Sr.; three daughters: Jonelle Abe, Doreen Duncan, Neva Meyers; two step-daughters: Nancy Fox, Kathy Dancing Bull-Buffalo Boy; 35 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
Her family is comforted in knowing she was welcomed by her husband, parents, six brothers, son, and five grandchildren. She will be deeply missed.
