Doris Marilyn Sayler was born September 17, 1933 in Garrison, ND to Carl and Katherine (Wetzel) Sayler. She was raised and educated in Garrison, graduating from Garrison High School in 1952. Doris married Alex Steinwand on June 2, 1954 in Max, ND. They made their home on a farm northeast of Garrison. Doris had a tremendous work ethic and worked right along side Alex with all the farming and ranching duties. While helping Alex with the farm, they also raised 4 children and Doris sewed all the clothes for them when they were young.
Doris was a very dedicated member of the First Congregational Church/United Church of Christ in Garrison. She spent countless hours with the women's church circles and church events. She was a wonderful mentor to many young women who still to this day talk about their experience in TOPS 153. She was an extremely kind and caring person who always put others first. Her family was her utmost concern and she always greeted people with a smile and loved to laugh with them. Purple was Doris' favorite color and she will be fondly remembered for always wearing and displaying purple in her home and everywhere she went. She will also be remembered for "The Best" Carmel rolls and awesome fried chicken!
Doris is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Alex Steinwand, Garrison; son, Graling (Susan) Steinwand, Garrison; daughters, Debra Steinwand, Lincoln, Pam (Gary) Trueblood, Minot, Gail Steinwand, Garrison; grandchildren, Cassie (Derick) Trueblood-Seibel, Isaiah Steinwand (Mariya Williams), Jason (Michelle) Fliginger, Ryan Fliginger; great grandchildren, Zaheir Steinwand, Brycen Burgard, Ricque (Robert) Innes, and Viola Salgado; brother, Floyd (Delores) Sayler, Butte, MT; and numerous nieces and nephews who Doris held close to her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters-in-law, Art (Una) Sayler, Howard (Emagene) Sayler, sisters and brothers-in-law, Alvina (Walter) Buchannan, Stella (Bennie) Wiehle, Elsie Sayler, Ruth (Willis) Winn, Alpha Pietsch, and Leona Hausauer.
