Obituary

Dorothy Thompson, 104, of Garrison, passed away July 10, 2023.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Garrison, ND, a Rosary will be held one hour prior to services. Burial to follow at Endres Catholic Cemetery, Max, ND.

Dorothy Caroline (Auch) Thompson was born March 22nd, 1919 to Christian and Christine (Hummel) Auch. A life-long resident of Garrison, Dorothy and her siblings worked hard on the family farm and enjoyed all the seasonal activities that Mclean County has to offer.

On November 11th, 1937 Dorothy married Thomas (known as Tommy) N. Thompson of Max, ND and shortly after purchased a little country gas station along highway 83, which at the time was called the seven-mile corner (now called the Garrison Corner). Many travelers through the area were blessed by the inexpensive gas and warm hospitality they found in Tommy and Dorothy.

In 1979, Dorothy moved into the large family home designed by her husband Tommy, that currently stands at six-mile corner and  at one time had a large vegetable garden out front. The landscape has changed some over the years, but up until the age of 97, Dorothy could be seen tending her lawn on her riding mower. To this very day you can still see the painted "smiley faces" as you drive by.

One of her greatest joys was music and dancing. While she loved listening to the country music of George Strait, her absolute favorite was Polka and the Waltz of an Angel.

Cooking was as much a hobby as a need for Dorothy and she loved including her family and friends in the labor-intensive strudla and knephla production parties. She was probably best known for "Dorothy's Donuts" that were loved not just by locals but family, friends across the country.

She enjoyed volunteering at the Garrison nursing home, GARP and as a township election official. She particularly enjoyed the many Dicken's Festivals that she participated in.

Another hobby was crocheting: doilies, afghans and quilts. A wonderful seamstress, she sewed clothes not only for herself, but also for her children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. More recently she was quite happy to sew denim quilts for her family.

Dorothy will be missed by her son Gerald (Joan), daughter-in-law Brenda, her grandchildren Julie (Jeffrey), Patrick (Tracy), Jason (Christy), Shannon (Shannon), Lance (Tracy), Shane (Melissa) and Mitch (Lacey), her great-grandchildren Madison, Zane, Marley, Cameron, Teagan, Kaydin, Trevor, Courtney and Brodi.

Dorothy was predeceased in death by her beloved husband Thomas and her son Llewellyn.

Dorothy's faith in God sustained her through an extraordinary life filled with many blessings and sadly, her share of heartache. With the love of family and friends, her last days were spent involved, engaged and living her life to the fullest.

Her parting quote to us all "I forgive those who may have injured me in any way by word or deed. And I ask forgiveness of those whom I may have hurt by my words or my actions".
