"Good Eyes" was born to Matthew & Alice (Eagle) White Bear, Sr. on March 25, 1936 in Elbowoods, ND. He attended grade school at Nishu Day School and went to school at Marty Indian School, SD.
He served in the United States Navy from 1955 – 1959. He traveled to many places while in the Navy. He spoke often of the Mediterranean and Red seas, Italy, Egypt and New Port, RI. He served on the USS Hickock and the USS McGowan and was honorably discharged.
He worked on the Ft. Thompson Dam, along with his many friends and relatives. He was united in marriage to Celeste Dickens, in 1961, while married they had 3 children: Dorven Jr., Donna Mae, and Cary Roy. Later, Dorvan and Yvonne White met and have been together for 35 years.
Upon returning from Ft. Thompson he was employed at the White Shield School as a bus driver/custodian for 45 years, retiring in 2006. He enjoyed driving bus for the kids the most and had lots of good stories of all the students who rode his bus.
Dorvan participated in Rodeo and was an avid bareback rider, marked by the many buckles he had won. He also was a mentor in the White Shield Rodeo Club.
Dorven enjoyed playing soft ball and horseshoes. In his softball years he was lovingly called the "the dinosaur" of the pitchers mound by the opposing team. Everyone "knew" who the "allnighters" were, the co-ed team that was made up of many family members. Dorven's love of horeshoes and playing in tournaments was something he did with passion. It is said he could get "a ringer" with his eyes closed. Hunting and fishing was another past time that Dorven did with great spirit and love.
Anyone who knew Dorven "knew" he was a true Vikings fan. Win or lose, he remained a whole-hearted, dedicated fan to the end. Go Vikings!
Dorven was an active member of the community. One of his greatest joys was the Sacred Heart Church of which he was a founding member and participated in creating the building fund which helped the church to be built.
He is survived by his wife Yvonne White Bear, daughters Brandie (T.J.), White Bear, Cody White Bear (Shannon), Shania White Bear, White Shield, Dorven White Bear, Jr. (Hazel), Porcupine, ND., Cary Roy White Bear (Joy) White Shield, Donna Mae (Jon) Lewis.
