Obituary

Duane Zimmerman, 84, Garrison died Thursday, August 6th, 2015 at the Benedictine Living Center in Garrison. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 10th, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison with Rev. Dick Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be at the Garrison City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 9th, 2015 from 1 to 7 pm at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.

Duane was born March 15, 1931 to Herman and Beatrice (Ziegler) Zimmerman. He was raised in the Emmet area, attended grade school at Hackett Country School until 8th grade, and graduated from Garrison High School in 1950. He continued his education as one of the NDSU "90 Day Wonders."

Duane married Joan DeHaven on September 28, 1952 at the First Congregational Church in Garrison. He was a farmer at heart and loved farming the land. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, shooting pool, and one of his favorite pastimes was playing cribbage with his wife, Joan, at the Benedictine Living Center.

Duane was a member of the ASCS Committee. He enjoyed sharing his experiences and new ideas with the younger farmers in the area. He was one of the founding members of MEY (Maximum Economic Yield) Club. Duane was also a member of the Garrison Rural Fire Department, the McLean County Crop Improvement Association, and a 4-H leader.

Duane is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan, Garrison; sons, Mike (Marcia) Zimmerman, Garrison, David Zimmerman of Monroe, Washington; daughters, Julie (Rick) Gienger, Garrison, Lori (Rod) Ahlsten, Eden Prairie, MN; grandchildren, Annie (Eric) Lukkari, Zimmerman, MN, Cyndie (Corey) Behles, Garrison, Jim (Claudia) Zimmerman, Seltisberg, Switzerland, Corey Gienger, Fargo, Brad Gienger, Burlington, Kim Gienger, Fargo, Paige Ahlsten and Hannah Ahlsten, Eden Prairie, MN, Chelsey Zimmerman, Portland, OR, and Jenica Zimmerman, Kirkland, WA; great grandchildren, Ella Lukkari, Casey, Sarah, Ally, and Coryssa Behles, and Joel and Loren Zimmerman; sister, Sharon Eslinger, Garrison, and brothers, Dale (Helen) Zimmerman, Garrison and Pete (Alma) Zimmerman, Duluth, MN. He is also survived by many other family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be given to the McLean County Crop Improvement Association, PO Box 1108, Washburn, ND 58577 or donor's choice.
