Emil "Bennie" Hauf, 82, Max, formerly of Benedict, died on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at Trinity Hospital in Minot. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2:00 pm at Concordia Lutheran Church in Benedict. Burial will take place in the spring at Hope Lutheran Cemetery in rural Sawyer.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5 to 7 pm at Concordia Lutheran Church in Benedict.
Bennie was born in rural Benedict to Leo and Ludvica (Schmidt) Aplass Hauf. He grew up on the family farm near Benedict and was one of nine siblings. He was educated at Iota Flat Rural School until the 8th grade when he decided he knew more than his teachers, so he didn't need high school! He worked on the family farm until the age of 18. Bennie then went west for two years where he took welding classes and worked various construction jobs, which aided in his work at the missile sites back in North Dakota until 1963.
Bennie married Eydie (Cecelia) Stein in Morristown, SD on April 20, 1963. In 1964 they moved to the farm near Benedict where they raised four children. They resided at the farm for 47 years raising dairy cows and farming. In later years they quit raising dairy cattle to raise Angus cattle. They moved in to Max in 2009 following their retirement.
Bennie enjoyed hunting and fishing, card games, playing marbles with his grandchildren, and generally giving everyone a bad time. He was quite the story teller and loved to visit.
Bennie died 80 years to the day (February 9th) that his father, Leo Hauf, died.
Bennie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Eydie, daughter, Dana Hauf, (Minot, ND); sons, Jon (Jodi) Hauf, (Max, ND), Darren (Heather) Hauf, (Benedict, ND), and Joel (Natalie) Hauf, (Max, ND); five grandkids, Ean, Gracie, Zander, Brayden, and Carson; sisters, Lena Belew (Tucson, AZ) Betty Buxa (Rochester, MN), Evelyn Pryor, (Denver, CO); brother, Allen Aplass, (Walla Walla, WA); numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, and his extended family Paul and Sara Ruhland and their children, Dalaney and Dalen.
