IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Esther
Steinwand
June 8, 1928 – August 18, 2019
Esther Steinwand, 91, Bismarck, formerly of Garrison, died on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at a Bismarck care center. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 10:30 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison. Interment will be held at the Garrison City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 5 to 7 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison.
Esther June Steinwand was born June 8, 1928 in rural Turtle Lake to Andrew and Julia (Walter) Sackman. She was raised and educated in the rural Turtle Lake area and later completed high school studies by correspondence, earning her GED. She married Wilbert Steinwand in Turtle Lake on October 10, 1946, moving to Wilbert's farm outside of Garrison where side by side they worked to build up their farm and together raised two children, Diana and Terry. Esther remained on the farm following Wilbert's death in 2007. Then, because of health reasons, she moved to Edgewood assisted living in Mandan in 2017 and then to the Baptist Health Care Center in Bismarck until 2019.
Esther was a life member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garrison, served as secretary of Snow Township for 28 years, and for several years, worked at Frederick's Variety and Chase Pharmacy in Garrison.
Esther loved the farm life and worked hard helping Wilbert in the fields, milking cows, and raising chickens and geese but her passion was her gardening. She always planted a huge garden, loved watching her plants sprout and grow and then sharing all of her produce with her family. But above all else, she cherished her family. She adored each family member and always made each one feel special, from the oldest child to the youngest great grandchild. She always enjoyed family coming to the farm to visit, especially the grandchildren coming to spend a few days. Each one will remember her signature chicken and dumplings which was always on the menu when they came to stay.
Esther is survived by one daughter, Diana Edinger, Underwood, one son and daughter-in-law, Terry (Mary Dawn) Steinwand, Mandan; six grandchildren, J.J. Nelson, Kuna, ID, Jodi (Brad) Meyer, Johnston, IA, Josh (Tosha) Steinwand, Mandan, Jeremy Steinwand, Sheboygan, WI, Tyler (Aubrie) Steinwand, Mandan, Kayla Steinwand, Mandan; five great grandchildren, Jack and Henry Meyer, Johnston, IA, Emmalynn and Teagan Steinwand, Mandan, and Milo Steinwand, Mandan; one brother, Ervin Sackman, Silver Lake, KS; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Bussman, Grand Forks, and Mona Reinisch, Garrison and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wilbert, one son-in-law, Ray Edinger, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jacob and Regina (Weber) Steinwand, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
