Floyd Stockdill, 91, Garrison, died on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at the Benedictine Living Center in Garrison. Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 1:00 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison.
Floyd G. Stockdill was born September 15, 1924 to Ray and Christine (Hillern) Stockdill in Hartland, ND, where he was raised and educated. Following high school, Floyd started farming and also worked at Oppen's Grocery in Minot.
On September 29, 1945 Floyd married Leatrice Knight in Berthold, ND. This past September they celebrated 70 years as husband and wife. During those 70 years, they lived in Berthold, Turtle Lake, and then settled in Garrison in 1964. Floyd began working for MDU in 1956, retiring in 1986 after 30 years with the company.
While living in Garrison, Floyd was very active in the community. Floyd and Leatrice were members of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where Floyd served on the church council. He was also a member of the Garrison City Council for a number of years. Floyd was a very dedicated member and later honorary member of the Garrison Fire Department for many, many years. He was also a lifetime member of the ND Volunteer Firefighters Association. He was very proud to have served as a volunteer firefighter.
Floyd was a quiet, laid back man. He loved to spend time at the lake, especially fishing. The most important thing in Floyd's life however, was his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Floyd's way of life was simple. Faith, work, laughter, and love; his family being at the center of it all, was how he lived. His family will miss him dearly, but are grateful beyond words for all the wonderful memories. His legacy of time spent at the lake, the laughter with family and friends, will live in his family's hearts forever.
Floyd is survived by his lifelong companion and wife of 70 years, Leatrice, Garrison; sons, Jeff (Sandra) Stockdill, Velva, ND, Timothy (Diane) Stockdill, Garrison, ND, Garland (Jackie) Stockdill, Bismarck, ND, Jay (Sherry) Stockdill, Plentywood, MT; daughters, Pamela (Ricky) Schulz, Coal Valley, IL, Penny (Michael) Johnson, St. Charles, IL, Shelly (Allan) Mautz, Hazen, ND, and Beth (Dennis) Hoffer, Garrison, ND; 30 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Eileen Olson and Shirley Singer; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 grandchildren, Flynn Schulz and Pepper Johnson, brothers, Raymond, Percy, Lynn, and Vernon Stockdill, and sisters, Elsie Asmundson, Clarice Grasso, and Joyce Lallo.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Camp of the Cross in Garrison, the Garrison Fire Dept., or the donor's choice.
