Obituary

Gerald B. Deane, affectionately known as "Grandpa," age 80, of Toledo, Iowa, formerly of Chicago, Ill., and White Shield, N.D., passed away at home surrounded by family members on Friday, Oct. 21, 2011. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Ralph Wells Memorial Complex in White Shield. Wake services will be held today, Oct. 25, at 5 p.m. at the complex. Burial will be at the Old Scout Cemetery in White Shield.

Gerald B. Deane was born in Elbowoods, North Dakota, on Dec. 10, 1930. He was the son of William Deane Jr. and Leona (Yellowbird) Deane. In his youth, he met and made lifetime friends and relatives with John Danks, Emerson Packineau, Eugene White and Matt Mason. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Jones on Nov. 28, 1954. Gerald moved his family to Chicago, Ill., where they raised eight children. He was a great provider and protector for his family. He worked for Commonwealth Edison for over 35 years and retired to Toledo, Iowa. He was a longtime parishioner of Saint Mary of the Lake Church in Chicago. He enjoyed reading and watching westerns, playing cards and playing the casinos.

Gerald was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth M. Deane, his parents, William Jr. and Leona Deane, three brothers, Kenneth, Victor and Joseph Deane, and one sister, Marie Wells (Deane).

He is survived by: his three daughters, Veronica and Deborah Deane of Chicago, Ill.; Mary Deane of Layton, Utah; five sons, David (Maryann) Deane, Jay Deane, Michael (Patricia) Deane, Edward (Ruth) Deane of Chicago, Ill., and Les (Kay) Deane of Toledo, Iowa. He is also survived by his three sisters, Marcella (Eugene) White, Delores Wilkinson and Catherine Realbird, twenty-two grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was the proud uncle of many nieces and nephews.

The immediate family would like to specially recognize Les and Kay Deane for the caretaking of Gerald during his last years.
