Obituary

Our Beloved Mother and Grandmother Gladyce F. "Bullock" Schei 99, Garrison, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2020. Gladyce was born August 8, 1920 in Wahpeton, North Dakota to Elmer and Florence "Trebil" Bullock. She graduated High School 1938 and attended Wahpeton State School of Science for one year prior to moving to Minot, North Dakota in 1940 with her parents. She married Alfred Melroy Schei "Roy" June 27, 1941 in Minot. Their first daughter Connie was born in 1942. They all moved to Seattle, Washington for two years where daughter Margaret "Peggy" was born 1945. They returned to Minot after the War and son Richard was born in 1948. Roy, Gladyce and family moved to Garrison, North Dakota in 1952, where Roy was custodian of the Garrison High School for 17 years. Gladyce only intended to help get things started at the school by helping Roy. She also provided daycare for children of school faculty at the end of the school day (her second work day) and returned the children to the school so their parents could take them home. Roy passed away in 1970 and Gladyce continued to work at the school, culminating in 33 years of service before her retirement in 1989. Gladyce enjoyed it when former students stopped by to visit her and she appreciated cards and letters she received throughout the years from several students up to the time of her passing.

Gladyce always had a warm, pleasant smile and sincere welcome to all. She always enjoyed children and people, wanting to help them whenever possible. She served as a volunteer for the Garrison Memorial Hospital and Benedictine Living Center for many years. She was a member of the United Church of Christ and taught Sunday School and Bible School. She also served as the President of the Naomi Circle for many years. Additionally, she served on different boards within the Garrison community including the Manor Board, the Benedictine Nursing Home Board and the Community Chest Board. She enjoyed writing poetry, reading, baking and sewing. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, who were all very special to her, as well as with family and friends. She enjoyed collecting Angels which her friends, grandchildren and Son helped ensure that she had a large collection. Gladyce enjoyed traveling to Oregon, Texas and California to visit family. She was an incredibly kind, compassionate and loving person who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving family includes: daughters Connie Cruz, Dallas, Texas, and Margaret "Peggy" Burns, Stanfield, Oregon; son Richard (Janice) Schei, Minot, North Dakota; sisters-in-law, Dee Bullock, Sherwood, North Dakota and Patty Ballestrasse, Fall City, Washington; several nieces and cousins; grandchildren Holly Grotts, Dallas, Texas; Justin (Ellie) Grotts, Oklahoma; Michael Best, Dallas, Texas; Jonathan Cruz, Dallas, Texas; Michele Burns-Rodriguez, Stanfield, Oregon; Melroy (Michele) Schei, Minot, North Dakota; DeAnna (Zeke) Hernandez, Palmdale, California; Jessica (Kelly) Grotte, Des Lacs, North Dakota; Denise (Eric) Gilles, Minot, North Dakota; as well as 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
