March 30, 1925 – December 6, 2018
Harold Uhlich, 93, Garrison, died on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at the Garrison Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison. Burial will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 am at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 5 to 7 at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.
Harold was born March 30, 1925 in Bismarck, ND to Christ and Amelia(Schiermeister) Uhlich. He graduated from Garrison High School in 1943. He helped on the family farm before enlisting in the Marine Corp. in November of 1944. He attended basic training in Camp Lejeune, NC and his transport ship stopped in Pearl Harbor, HI for repairs before reporting for duty in the Occupation of Japan from September 1945 to June 1946. He returned to the United States and was discharged in August 1946.
After returning to North Dakota he once again helped on the farm before attending Hanson Mechanical Trade School in Fargo, ND. He worked as a mechanic on various construction projects including, Snake Creek Embankment, Oahe Dam in Pierre, SD, Glendo Dam, WY and the runway at Minot Air Force Base.
Harold married Lorraine (Huettl) in Max, ND on August 1st, 1954. They continued to live and work on the farm while raising their children. In addition to farming he worked for J.P. Robinson repairing boat motors. He eventually opened H.R. Repair and boat owners would travel from all over the state to have their motors repaired.
He was a 74 year member of Hugh P. Minehan American Legion in Garrison where he served as a past commander and spent many years on the color guard. Harold was also heavily involved in making sausage for the annual sausage supper hosted by the legion.
Harold is survived by his children, Steven (Sue Walz) Uhlich, Garrison, Ginny, Fargo, Nancy (Orbie) Fields Garrison, Annie Welch, Minot, Lori (Russ) Vollendorf, Milwaukie OR, Dale Uhlich, Garrison; grandchildren, Casey and Christopher Welch, Dalton and Sadie Vollendorf, Christian Uhlich; one great grandchild, Blake Welch, and several step-grandchildren and great grand-children; brother, Art Uhlich, Douglas WY, brother-in-law, Jim Britsch, Lake Oswego OR, sister-in-law, Mary Larson, Ellensburg WA and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine, parents, mother and father-in-law, Aloys and Nora Huettl, brother James, brothers-in-law. George (Elna) Huettl, Don(Wanda) Huettl and Paul Larson; sisters-in-law, Margie (Dwain) Sorenson, Audrey Britsch, and Pauline Uhlich; and nephews, Daryl Sorenson and Mark Huettl.
