Helen Hummel, 91, Garrison, died peacefully on Sunday, April 26, 2020 at the Garrison Hospital. Private family funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:00 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison. Burial will be held at the Garrison Cemetery immediately following services with social distancing used as a precaution.

There will be a private funeral ceremony held at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison on Friday, May 1st, 2020. A celebration of life is planned for later this summer.
Helen was born on December 21, 1928 in Minot, North Dakota to Clarence and Bertha Underdahl. She graduated from Minot High School in 1946 and earned a teaching degree from Minot State College in 1950. She was a teacher in Turtle Lake, Kenmare, and Garrison. Helen married Edwin Nathan in 1952, who unexpectedly passed in 1954. She later married Edwin Hummel in 1956 in Minot. They farmed southeast of Garrison until they retired in 1983 and moved into town. Helen was an active member of the Saint Paul Lutheran Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the women's group. She was also involved with the Ft. Stevenson Foundation, Heritage Park Foundation, served on the election board, and was very active in community activities with her children. She was involved with preparing for the county and state fairs, along with the annual 4-H talent show. Helen and Edwin enjoyed enjoyed antiquing, traveling to all parts of the United States, and found special enjoyment in traveling on bus tours with the North Dakota 4-H leaders. Helen also loved cooking, baking, spending time with her family, and read the Minot Daily Newspaper faithfully each day.
Helen is survived by five children JoAnn (Donnie) Bergsgaard, Cavalier; Elaine Hanley, Garrison; LaVonne (Jerry) Mercure, Aurora, CO; Cheryl (Mike) Brown, Lenexa, KS; and Duane (Julie) Hummel, Garrison. She is also survived by eight grandchildren (Carrie Randolph, Justin Bergsgaard, Roger Hanley, Anna Mertz, Bryce Hummel, Jessica Hummel, Kacey Brown, Lauren Brown), ten great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and husbands.
