Janice Elaine Hosie Garcia, 71, White Shield, died on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at her home. A viewing will be held on Saturday from 9 to 11 am at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison. A service will be held before proceeding to Sacred Heart Cemetery in White Shield.
In consideration of CDC, North Dakota, and Mandan Hidatsa Arikara Nation COVID-19 guidelines, family and friends may pay their respects from 9 to 11 on Saturday October 3, 2020, at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison. Social distancing guidelines will be observed; masks are encouraged.) The procession to the Sacred Heart Cemetery south of White Shield will leave the funeral home at approximately 11. Please observe social distancing guidelines at the cemetery.
Janice Elaine Hosie (Walks Pretty), 71 White Shield took her journey to the spirit world Tuesday September 29, 2020 in White Shield, North Dakota. Janice was born June 24, 1949 in Elbowoods, ND to Wallace "Sparky" and Pliga (Youngbird) Hosie. Her maternal grandparents were Jessie (Everette) and Ben Youngbird and her paternal grandparents were Lottie (Styles) and George Hosie. She was a grandchild of the Low Cap clan and received her Indian name from her auntie Theresa (Youngbird) Danks.
Janice completed Elementary and Junior High Schooling in White Shield School. She graduated from Flandreau Indian school in Flandreau, SD. Attended Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD.
As we all know, Janice was a traveler she started her adult life out in California right after high school in 1967, where she stayed until the early 70's, when she planted roots in Sioux Falls, SD attending Augustana while working at Pacific Bell and Lintons Microwave. In 1982, she daringly followed her little sister Greta to Oregon and worked for the BIA Law Enforcement and Chemawa Indian School where she retired in 2007. She then moved back to White Shield, ND, until health issues arose then she moved back to Oregon to stay with her daughter Annie.
Throughout her life, Janice was a free spirit, kind, caring, generous, resilient, colorful and when needed to be a fierce momma bear. She was beloved by all who met her because of her laughter, sincerity and genuine empathy. Janice maintained many close friendships with others from all walks of life and times in her life. Janice enjoyed Bingo and Casino time with her little sister Greta and Auntie Sara. She had an amazing love for all kinds of music, including oldies, country and Mexican music.
Janice is survived by Sister Greta (Carlos) Acosta of White Shield and her brothers Richard Hosie of Bismark, ND, Leonard (Aldeen) Hosie of White Shield, ND, Dewey (Debbie) Hosie of White Shield, Wallace "Frosty" (Clarinda) Hosie of Garrison, ND, David Hosie of Parshall, ND, Kerry (Jan) Hartman of Lucky Mound, ND; Daughters Donna Hall of Parshall, ND (Raised by Ed and Delphine Hall), Audrey (Daren) Dalrymple of Artois, CA, Ann (John) Jackson of Milwaukie, OR, Steve (Amanda) Garcia of White Shield, ND, Elizabeth (David) Garcia of Corvallis, OR, Pliga "Mina" Garcia of Salem, OR. Granddaughters Ashley Hall, Alison Dalrymple, Jennifer Russell, Janice Russell, Leah Garcia, Mavis Russell, Alivia Garcia and Lil Aubie Russell. Grandsons Kyler Hall, Jonathon "Little" Connors, Leslee Dalrymple, Darius "Pooka" Jackson, Jayden Garcia, Quincy "Rootie" Jackson, Benjamin Tapia and Ezequiel Temoxle-Garcia; Great-grandchildren Nora Hall, Kyler Hall Jr., Kaylee Hall, and Elaina Connors. And countless beloved aunties, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
Janice is preceded by her mother Pliga Youngbird and father Wallace "Sparky" Hosie; sister Silvia SpottedHorse and brothers Eric Hosie Sr. and Benjamin Hosie;
We, Janice's family loved her more than words can say. We were so happy when she returned from Oregon. We will miss her.
Please forgive us many friends and family, Janice loved all of you, however if we missed your name it was not intentional.
