Obituary

Joan Youngs, 84, went to be with her Lord Sunday, March 3rd, 2013 at a Bismarck hospital.

Joan M. Youngs was born May 6, 1928 in Bradford, Pennsylvania to Elmer B. Peterson and Alida E. (Colson) Peterson. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at the University of Buffalo, New York and served as head nurse of Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo, New York.

While on vacation in North Dakota with a nurse friend, she met Burton O. Youngs of Roseglen. They were married at First Baptist Church in Bradford, Pennsylvania January 26, 1957. They made their home on the farm near Roseglen and she worked early in their marriage at the Garrison Memorial Hospital until starting a family. She returned to nursing in the late 70's, working at the Garrison Nursing Home for a number of years until retirement. She was always proud of those she trained as part of her nursing duties. Burton and Joan retired from farming in 1985 and moved to Garrison in the spring of 1991.

Joan lived her faith and shared that at Immanuel Lutheran of Roseglen and later St. Paul Lutheran of Garrison. Her faith was unshakeable. She served in many capacities in both churches and enjoyed her time singing with the St. Paul Choir. She spent many joyful hours volunteering for the Camp of the Cross of rural Garrison. She was also active in several other community organizations.

She enjoyed gardening and could often be found – trowel in hand – in her flower beds. She loved crafts and got together with family and friends many times to make things. Baking was another passion; she was always baking items to be sent with family and friends. She enjoyed teaching her children, grandchildren and others how to make lefse and Scandinavian flat bread.

She was a caregiver from the very beginning and was the most happy when she could be caring for family, friend or neighbor.

Her greatest joy in life was her grandchildren. The more time she could spend with them, the happier she was. She loved teaching them how to bake, crochet, knit and play Uno.

She is survived by her husband, Burton Youngs, Garrison and children Burton (Beckie) Williston, Lisa (Richard) Cole Roseglen, Mike (Deb) Garrison. Grandchildren Chris, Mary, Katelyn and Allyson. Sister Elizabeth "Betty" Boss Richmond, Virginia and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law Charles W. Boss Richmond, Virginia.

Memorials are preferred to be sent to the Camp of the Cross, Garrison, ND.
