Kenneth Norenberg, 78, Garrison, died on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at his home from an apparent heart attack. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2:00 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison. Burial will be held at the Garrison City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 to 7 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison.

Ken was born August 23, 1940 in Denbigh, ND to Ervin and Olga (Genetzky) Norenberg. Even as a young boy, Ken's love for the outdoors was always very evident. He loved spending time at Buffalo Lodge fishing and hunting, especially with his dogs, all of whom he cherished all his life. He attended Norenberg Elementary School and graduated from Towner High School in 1960. Following high school, Ken worked for several different construction companies, his most memorable was helping build bridges at the J. Clark Wildlife Refuge in Upham, ND. He later worked for Johnson Chevrolet (oh the irony!) in Minot, ND.

In 1964, Ken got his dream opportunity with MDU in Minot, then transferring to Garrison in 1974, a perfect fishing and hunting location. On June 11, 1965, Ken married Janice Honcharenko at Zion Lutheran Church in Minot, ND. They made their home in Garrison raising their children, twins, Kimberly and Gerard, and daughter, Becky. Ken retired after 30 years of dedicated service.
While living in Garrison, Ken was very active in the community. He served many years as an active fireman and later as an honorary member of the Garrison Fire Department. He was a part of several civic club committees and helped with the Boy Scouts when his son, Gerard, was active. Ken was always a committed member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison, especially after his retirement when he helped with the action groups and served as groundskeeper. Because of his love for the outdoors, Ken found himself helping with various activities with the Sakakawea Pheasants Forever and the ND Governor's Cup, whether it was volunteering time or fishing the tournament itself. Ken was an avid NASCAR fan, and of course followed the Ford drivers, especially Mark Martin. He and Jan also attended the activities of their children and grandchildren every chance that they could. Ken spent many days of his life hunting, mostly upland birds, and he so enjoyed watching his dogs work the field, especially his beloved Millie and Windsor. To say that Ken's favorite pastime was fishing would be the world's greatest understatement. Ken absolutely loved to fish. Wind, weather, or poor fishing, it didn't matter; Ken was "going" fishing. If someone wanted to go with that was great, if not, he always had a blondie to take with, usually Millie or Windsor. Although his family mourns his loss, they find comfort knowing he and his beloved daughter Becky are on the calm waters of heaven reeling in walleyes!

Ken is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jan, Garrison, daughter, Kim (Brian) Gehring; son, Gerard (Jennifer) Norenberg; son-in-law, Todd Wyman, all of Garrison; grandchildren, Luke and Shelby Gehring, Austin and Meghan Wyman, and Matthew, Brady, and Sophia Norenberg, all of Garrison; sisters-in-law, Sharon Rollman and Carol Honcharenko; brother-in-law, Arnold Honcharenko; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Becky Wyman, brother, Dennis Norenberg, sister-in-law, Marilee Honcharenko, brother-in-law, Marvin Honcharenko, and nephew, Allen Honcharenko.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to St. Paul Lutheran Church or the Garrison Camp of the Cross.
