Lawrence was born July 1, 1922 in McLean County to Mathias and Margaret (Finken) Lies. He was raised on the family farm and educated in rural schools.

He was a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Douglas. After 44 years of living in Douglas he and Emma moved to Garrison in 1995 and became members of St. Nicholas Catholic Church.

Lawrence was a member of the Douglas Nifty Fifties and Garrison Senior Citizens. He was also active in numerous community affairs and served on the Douglas School Board. He loved bowling, fishing, hunting, playing cards, and helped clean fish for many years during the annual North Dakota Governor's Cup.
