Leslie Engel, 85, Garrison, passed away on June 30, 2013 at a Garrison hospital. Funeral services were held on Friday, July 5, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison. Burial was at the Garrison City Cemetery.
Leslie was born on April 18, 1928 on the family farm in McGinnis Township to William and Emillia (Weber) Engel. He was one of 11 children. He attended school in the Garrison School District and church in a country church near their home.
On April 25, 1948 he was married to Ida Sayler. They had 3 sons, Alan, Wesley and Daryl.
Along with his farming he worked for many farmers and businesses in the area. In 1976 he bought and operated a small tree service, moving many trees in the area. He was active in his city and his church at St. Paul Lutheran in Garrison. He drove school bus for the district and was active in FFA, receiving the Honorary Chapter Farmer award. He was a member of the Garrison fire department and was rural chief for a time.
He was involved with no-till and organic farming and in 1982 was named the Soil Conservationist of the Year by the N.D. Wild Life Federation. He was a member of the Senior Center and enjoyed a cup of coffee and game of pinochle with friends and family.
Les is survived by his wife, Ida of 65 years, 3 sons, Alan, of Bismarck, Wesley, of Boise, ID and Daryl (Tami) of Garrison. 2 grandchildren Alana (Chris) Chaves of South Dartmouth, and Dylan Engel of Garrison; one great-grandson, Jace Chaves; 3 sisters, Millie Drayton, Ella O'Shea and Cleone (Paul) Westby; 1 brother, Bill, of Fair Haven. MA; one sister-in-law, Esther Engel, Garrison, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers, Christ (Lydia) Engel, and Art Engel, 4 sisters, newborn Otillia, Katherine (Ernie) Sayler, Clara (Rance) Sayler, and Frieda (Gordon) McElwain; brothers-in-law, Frank Drayton, Dennis O'Shea, Ted Wenger, and sister-in-law, Polly Engel.
