Obituary

Lydia Fliginger, 99, Garrison died Tuesday, September 05, 2017 in a Garrison Nursing Facility. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 9, at 2:30 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison, ND. Burial will be at the Garrison City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Friday from Noon to 6 at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.

Lydia was born January 28, 1918 to George and Regina (Boger) Buechler south of Minot, ND. She was raised and educated in Snow Township attending school through 8th grade at School #2, near Coleharbor, ND. As a young woman she did housekeeping and was a waitress at area restaurants.

On November 30, 1939 Lydia married Wayne Fliginger at Lydia's parent's farm near Coleharbor. In the spring of 1940, Lydia and Wayne moved to a homestead northeast of Garrison and started their lives in the farming and cattle industry. They later purchased the property and continued raising Hereford beef cattle, milk cows, (milked by hand!), horses and pigs. Lydia was very involved in all aspects of the farm, milking cows, raising chickens, turkeys, and caring for a big garden.

They built a new home on the farm in 1949, and for the first time had the conveniences of electricity, running water and sewer. They later received the pleasures of telephone in 1955, TV around 1956, gas-powered, and finally electric milk machines. In 1986 they made the difficult decision to leave the farm and build a new home in Garrison, moving in in November of that year.

Lydia was very active and busy at the farm, but her energy seemed to have no end. She was a 4-H leader for 9 years, and was also involved in the Band Mothers for 6 years. At one point and time held every office for St. Paul's Ladies Aid, and sewed for the church and for the McGinnis Homemaker's, giving many sewing lessons. Beside working on the farm, sewing, gardening, canning, and freezing the fruits of her labor, she would take a quiet time to read.

In August of 2011, Lydia moved to long term care at the Garrison Memorial Hospital Nursing Facility. Lydia continued to share her zest for life with her fellow residents and especially with the children that visited from the Garrison Schools.

Lydia is survived by her daughter, Faye (Glenn) Seidler, Garrison; grandchildren, Sundi (Brad) Lagge, and their children, (Sarah, Paige, Emmit, and Grant); Garrison, Spencer (Kerry) Seidler, Garrison, and their children, (Zachary and Morgan); Todd Fliginger, Minneapolis, MN, Troy Fliginger, Garrison, Thane (Roxanne) Fliginger, Fargo, (daughter, Daysha Fliginger, step children, Megan Jenstad and her son Keagan, Nate (Michaela) Jenstad and their children, (Mari and Max), granddaughter, Carleen (Russ) Gust, Minot, and their children, (Ryker, Claire, and Briggs); and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne, son Darrel Fliginger and great grandsons, Thans and Chase Fliginger, brothers, Emil and Edwin Buechler, and sisters, Louise Ulrich, Emma Lies, and Eldora Johnson.
