Mary DeHaven, 89, Garrison, died on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014 at a Garrison nursing home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 am at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison. Burial will be at St. Nicholas Cemetery. A rosary will be said on Tuesday at 7:00 pm at the church.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2 to 6 at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.
Mary Gertrude Walsh was born July 9, 1924 in rural Emmet, ND to Maurice and Odella (Perron) Walsh. She attended country schools near her home and later attended Garrison schools. While growing up, Mary's family worked a coal mine for income as well as raising sheep.
At age 19, to help with the war effort, Mary moved to Washington and worked as a template maker in the shipyards in Vancouver. On May 20th, 1947, Mary was united in marriage to Robert DeHaven Sr. in Garrison at St. Nicholas Catholic Church. They celebrated their 66th Wedding Anniversay in May of 2013. After their marriage, Mary worked at the Garrison Bakery for a time and later worked as a housekeeper at the Garrison Hospital for 25 years.
Mary enjoyed working at home in her yard, especially planting flowers and watching their beauty unfold as they blossomed. She also loved to visit family in Bismarck and would make as occasional visit to Prairie Knights Casino.
Mary is survived by her husband, Robert, Garrison; sons, Robert "Bob" Jr. (special friend Carole Luetzen), Sheridan, WY, Greg (Darcy), Garrison, ND, Terry (Alana) DeHaven, Stanton, ND, Tom (Bonnie), Watford City, ND; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and a sister, Teresa Teed, Bremerton, WA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Gervase, Edmund, Paul, Victor, and Jerome, Tom, and Bob Walsh, sisters, Evangeline Hanson, Irene Busek, Elizabeth Swenningson, Charlotte Reuter.
