Monty Starr, 56, Grafton, formerly of White Shield, died on Friday at his home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 22, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Ralph Wells Jr. Memorial Complex in White Shield.
Monty was born in Stanley, ND on September 8, 1959 to Theresa (Star) Charging. His Indian name was Elk River and he was an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. He attended elementary school in Parshall, ND and Wahpeton Indian School and Dunseith High School for a time, ultimately graduated from White Shield High School. After high school, he attended Bismarck Junior College and the University of North Dakota for a period of time.
Monty worked for many years at San Haven State Hospital in Dunseith, ND while living with his sister Karen and her family. During his time in Dunseith, he worked at the Four D's with the Davis girls. After the closing of the State Hospital in Dunseith, ND, he moved and worked at the State Hospital and also Friendship, Inc. He made his home in Grafton, ND for 28 years until his death. While living in Grafton, ND, Monty became guardian to Greg Burr. They enjoyed traveling across the states, eating at different restaurants, watching movies, casinos, rummaging, visiting family and friends. He had many hobbies and shared them with others. Monty loved to joke and laugh! He had a sense of humor like no other. He had a huge heart and was always seeing what he could do for other people in his life, especially children.
Surviving Monty are: Mother: Theresa Charging, (Garrison, ND); Sisters: Karen (John) Gillis, (Chamberlain, SD); Theresa Star, (New Town, ND); Brother: McRoy Charging (White Shield, ND); Nephews: Dean Gillis (Lawrence, KS); Kyle Star (Parshall, ND); Dylan and Roman Charging (New Town, ND); Nieces: Cindy (Dave) Gillis (Kaysville, UT); Shannon (Stacy) Gillis-LaVallie (Lawrence, KS); Angelique Gillis (Bismarck, ND); Johnette Gillis (Lawrence, KS); Shari Tsonetokoy and Samantha De La Cerda (New Town, ND); Ann Rose Charging (White Shield, ND); Aunts: Margaret Starr (Wahpeton, ND); Janice Star (Garrison, ND) and Rhoda Star-Crawford (White Shield, ND) two godchildren from Grafton, ND and godchild Stacia LaVallie, Lawrence, KS; and numerous great-nephews and great-nieces that held a special place in his heart.
