Muriel Hanson, 82, Garrison, died on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at a Garrison hospital. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison. Burial will be at the Garrison City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3 to 7 at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.
Muriel was born March 17, 1931 in Dunseith, ND to Clarence and Jenny (Hurst) Handeland. She was raised and educated in Dunseith, graduating from Dunseith High School. She was once married to Wallace Cushing and Art Hanson. Muriel worked as a nurses aid at the Garrison Memorial Hospital for 16 years.
Muriel's true gift was her quilting ability. She literally quilted every day. Her quilts have been treasures to people across the state of North Dakota and she was very proud to have quilted with the ladies of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison. The quilts they made were sent to Honduras and were a great act of kindness to the people there.
Muriel is survived by 7 children, Connie (Howard) Martin, Tuczon, AZ, Carol (David) Russell, Omaha, Neb, Robert Cushing, Fargo, ND, Judy Bradley, Newburg, ND, JoAnn (Kevin) Olsen, Las Vegas, NV, Tammy (Jim) Lelm, Harvey, ND, and Stacer (Renie) Taylor, Bismarck, ND; siblings, Beverly Hamnes, Donald (Margaret) Handeland, Delores Johnson, Lorraine Millang, Charlotte (Roger) Hahn, and Duane Handeland; 14 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Beth Hanson, brother, Kenneth Handeland, and a sister, Elaine LaLone, and companion, Leslie Taylor.
