Obituary

Otto Kohler, 94, Garrison, formerly of Benedict, died on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at the Benedictine Living Center in Garrison. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2:00 pm at Concordia Lutheran Church in Benedict. Burial will be at Bethania Lutheran Cemetery in Benedict.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 1 to 7 pm at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.

Otto was born May 14, 1921 in Poplar Township, rural Benedict, to Christ and Caroline (Stelter) Kohler. He attended country school in Andrews Township. As a young man, Otto went to live with relatives in Chicago, where he worked at the Wrigley's Gum factory. During WWII, Otto was active in the Civilian Conservation Corp. (CCC's), stationed in Mankato, MN, where he was camp foreman.

On September 25, 1948 Otto married Anna Gullickson in Velva, ND. They made their home in rural Benedict, ND, where they farmed and raised their two sons, Curtis and Calvin. They were blessed to have shared almost 68 years as husband and wife.

Farming was a passion, as well as a hobby for Otto. He loved to work the land and see the rewards of his work come harvest time. When he took a break from farming, he loved to visit. It really didn't matter who or where, but he was well known as a story teller. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but they are thankful for the many wonderful years spent with him.

Otto is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Anna, Garrison, sons, Curtis (Dorothy) Kohler, Max, ND, Calvin (Sandie) Kohler, Mandan, ND; grandchildren, Clinton (Shelly) Kohler, Allan (Holly) Kohler, Corwin (Ronda) Kohler, Lori (Mark) Runnels, and Stacy (A.J.) Majeres; great grandchildren, Haley and Abbey Kohler, Carsen Kohler, Trenton Kohler and Kensley Runnels, and August and Sadie Majeres; brother and sister-in-law, Ernest (Hilda) Kohler; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ella (Ervin) Weishaar, and Jeanie (John) Bush; brother-in-law, Don Erck; sister-in-law, Martha Kohler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry (Alma) Kohler, Gust (Elaine) Kohler, and Oscar Kohler, and sister, Alma Erck, and an infant brother.
