IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard "Dick"
Ostby
November 9, 2020
Richard "Dick" Ostby, 81, of Douglas, passed away Nov. 9, 2020 in a Fargo, ND Hospital from COVID-19.
Dick was born on September 16, 1939 to Carl and Lillian (Meyer) Ostby in Minot, ND. In his early years, Dick worked various jobs in the area, including on the development of the missile sites, as a crane operator at Coal Creek Station, and later at the Douglas Elevator.
He married Kay Behles, November 3, 1962. After having lived in Garrison and Douglas, with the help of friends and family, Dick built their home on the farm where he and Kay lived for 41 years. From this devoted union, three sassy daughters—of which Dick was immensely proud—were born: Renee, Rachelle and Ronne.
Dick and Kay ran a custom manure hauling service for 24 years before selling it last year. He regularly surprised Kay with a variety of livestock he brought home to their ranch, northeast of Douglas. He might have only had an 8 th grade education but his mind worked like a rocket scientist always inventing and building something. He loved fishing and spent many summer vacations in the backwoods of Canada searching for the perfect lake. During those travels, he and Kay made many new friends. Dick was always generous with his time, talents and tools and never hesitated to help family, friends and neighbors. He worked hard, loved to be outside, and until contracting COVID was strong and active.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, son-in-law Allan Fetzer, brothers Robert and Ronald, sister Yvonne Stack and sister-in-law Betty Ostby.
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Kay; children Renee Fetzer, Rachelle and Mike Scheresky, Ronne Ostby and Greg Malling; grandchildren Morgan (Jarett) Bauer and Eric (Courtney) Fetzer, Allyce and Brook Scheresky. Great Grandchildren Ella and Lucy Fetzer.
Siblings: Roger and Rodney Ostby, Aljean (Will) Brule, and Mercedes Ostby.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison, ND. A memorial service will be planned at a later date. Our family asks that you honor and remember Dick by wearing your mask to slow the spread of COVID-19.
