Robert DeHaven Sr., 90, Garrison, died on Friday June 30, 2017 at the Benedictine Living Center in Garrison. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1:00 pm at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison. Burial will be at St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery in Garrison.
Viewing will be held from 11 to the time of services at the church.
Robert William DeHaven was born May 20, 1927 in Garrison, ND to Leonard and Edna (Williams) DeHaven. He attended school in Garrison and as a young man helped with the family farm, raising small grains and cattle.
Robert "Barney" worked at the Garrison Lumber Yard for a time and also farmed for a few years before starting his career as a truck driver. He worked construction jobs in many states but mostly around the Bismarck area. Barney took great pride in his truck driving skills and shared many stories of building and repairing our highways. He was also proud of how safe he drove and stayed accident free his entire career. He retired in 1989 with 25 years in the Teamsters Union.
On May 20, 1947, Barney was united in marriage to Mary Walsh at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in May of 2013.
Barney enjoyed hunting with family and friends in his early years, taking nice size whitetail bucks on a few occasions. He also enjoyed listening to Daniel O'Donnell music with Mary. They attended a concert at the Minot Hostfest, where he was able to shake Daniel's hand. Barney also loved to socialize and share stories at the local pub from time to time.
Barney is survived by his sons, Robert Jr. "Bob" DeHaven (special friend Carole Luetzen, Sheridan, WY, Greg (Darcy) DeHaven, Garrison, ND, Terry (Alana) DeHaven, Stanton, ND, Tom (Bonnie) DeHaven, Watford City, ND; 10 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; brother, Harold DeHaven, New Mexico; sisters, JoAnn Zimmerman, Marsha (Vic) Privratsky, all of Garrison, ND, Virginia Bell, Bismarck, ND, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary, and brother, Marshall "Butch" DeHaven.
